A Serious Comic Book about Alaska History

Sarah Hurst

Inspired by the late, great Harvey Pekar, Sarah Hurst discovered it was possible to create a comic book without having any ability to draw. As the author of “A Native Lad: Benny Benson Tells Alaska’s Story” she gathered a team of nine Alaskan artists to illustrate her words in an intriguing variety of styles. See some of this superb artwork in the slides that accompany her presentation about the book. Its 16 scenes depict different dramatic episodes in Alaska’s history, from the Alaska Purchase up to the discovery of oil at Prudhoe Bay and arrival and departure of Sarah Palin.

“A Native Lad: Benny Benson Tells Alaska’s Story” is available at Bosco’s in Anchorage or online at Amazon.com.
